Getting A Better Understanding of Water Conditions in Kaweah Sub-Basin

kaweahThe groundwater collection project in Tulare County hosted by the Greater, Mid and East Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSA) is well underway. The goal is to gather information to develop a better understanding of overall water conditions.

“We’re compiling all of the existing data that’s out there related to surface water and groundwater, and any of the inputs and outputs if you will, of the water budget,” said General Manager for the Greater Kaweah GSA Eric Osterling. “We’re trying to understand where all the wells are, where groundwater elevations are lower and where they’re higher, and understand the geology and how that relates to the water’s movement.”

The gathering of this type of data is critical in the development of Groundwater Sustainability Plans. “Those plans in a high-priority, critically over-drafted basins such as the Kaweah Sub-Basin are due by January of 2020, so there’s a mad-dash right now by these local governmental agencies to pull together as much information as they can,” Osterling noted.
