Blue Diamond Growers Director of Member Relations Mel Machado played a video during his California Association of Pest Control Advisors presentation that illustrated how much navel orange worm was in the crop as it came to processors. “That was a video of a stockpile of almonds. It had just come out of an orchard, and it was at the huller/sheller,” Machado said. “They noticed that the barn swallows were working for the pile and they don’t eat almonds; they eat insects. So moths were coming out of that pile that the birds were going after them.”
Machado said Blue Diamond spent a lot of time and money last year cleaning up the product.
