The 49th Annual Tri-County Walnut Day is being hosted by the University of California Cooperative Extension at the Wyndham Visalia on Thursday, February 1.  The event is designed to provide up to date information to growers on the issues affecting the walnut industry.Tri-County Walnut Day

Registration will open at 7 a.m. with coffee and danish provided by the California Walnut Commission and the California Walnut Board.  The Tulare County Board of Supervisors will be welcoming attendees as the event begins at 8 a.m., followed by a discussion titled ‘Today, Tomorrow, and Years to Come’ from the California Walnut Commission.

Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at UC Davis Themis Michailides will be presenting spray timing models for the control of Botryosphaeria canker and blight in walnuts.  Pomologist-AES and Professor of Plant Nutrition Pat Brown will be discussing the next 30 years of the Walnut Improvement Program at UC Davis.  A presentation on the management and environmental impacts on walnut pellicle color will also take place before the morning break.

The second half of the day will begin with a discussion from UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Range Advisor for Kern, Tulare and Kings Counties Julie Finzel on vertebrate pest management in walnut orchards.  Information on using mating disruption techniques for codling moth will also be presented.

The half-day session will conclude with a presentation on the status and impact of thousand cankers disease and the walnut twig beetle in California, followed by a lunch provided by the event sponsors.
