Cathy Isom has a sweet treat for pie lovers and lemon lovers. Get your forks ready! That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
If Lemon Pie is one of your favorite desserts, then today is your day to get your fork ready. August 15th is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day!
Served as a dessert, lemon meringue pie is a baked pie usually made with a crust of shortbread pastry, lemon curd filling and a fluffy meringue topping.
A meringue consists of egg whites whipped into stiff peaks with white sugar then baked in a slow oven. It then becomes crisp. Meringue can also be served individually with fruit fillings or as a cookie.
Meringue was perfected in the 17th century. Lemon meringue pie, as we know it today, was developed in the 19th century.
The United States is among the top 5 lemon-producing countries, besides India, Argentina, Spain and Iran. California, Arizona, and Texas are the top lemon producing states.
A one ounce serving of Lemon Meringue will cost you about 81 calories, by the way, if you’re watching your figure.
