Celebrating National Fruit and Vegetable Month

Dan Fruits & Vegetables, This Land of Ours

fruitCathy Isom has a friendly reminder about a month-long celebration of all of the produce that provide us fresh fruits and vegetables all year long. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable month. While most of us know that eating more fresh fruits and vegetables are important for good health, it’s also a good time to remind us of how much of these healthful goodies we actually eat.

Fruits and veggies provide a list of valuable nutrients your body needs including calcium, fiber, folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, as well as Vitamins A & C.  According to USDA MyPlate recommendations, we should all be eating 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables a day.

June is also the time of year when produce is at its peak season, so it’s a great time to visit your local farmer’s market. Some of the produce to buy this month include: watermelon, strawberries. cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, peaches and apricots.
