Two of the wine sectors biggest industry groups are calling for an elimination of wine tariffs between the United States and the European Union (EU). The Wine Institute and Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins (CEEV) are calling for an immediate lifting of the tariffs on wine.

The two wine groups formally signed a statement of principle on trade recently, encouraging officials in both the U.S. and the EU to adopt the concept of “zero for zero” when it comes to wine and excluding wine from any unrelated trade disputes in the future. The statement highlights that U.S. and EU wine exporters have traditionally faced low tariffs in each other’s markets, which has significantly benefitted the wine industries in both areas, increasing job opportunities, community investment, and consumer choice.

The CEEV represents 23 national organizations from 12 EU Member States, plus Switzerland and Ukraine, as well as a consortium of four leading European wine companies. The Wine Institute represents more than 1,000 winery and affiliated business members in California, which is the fourth-largest wine-producing region in the world.
