The Dairy Council of California has released it’s Fall 2012 trends report. According to the report , dairy has the potential to play a big role in diabetes prevention. AgNet West reporter Sabrina Hill has the story.

The report sites national data that shows diabetes in youth has skyrocketed, from just 9 percent in 2000 to 23 percent in 2008, and is expected to continue rising. People with Type II diabetes are at an increased risk for heart disease and stroke. According to the Dairy Council report, new research shows people who consume the most milk and milk products – regardless of fat content – have the lowest rates of diabetes. The report says several components in dairy are thought to beneficial, including vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, potassium, whey proteins, and even milk fat.
