Before you go into your yard or garden to start pulling those weeds. Cathy Isom has a few tips about growing weeds you can eat. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Growing Weeds You Can Eat

There are 28 weeds that are edible and probably dozens of those weeds can be found in your very own backyard. What may be considered a nuisance may actually be a nutritious source of sustenance that costs absolutely nothing to use. Once you know what to look for and what you can do with these complimentary consumables, you’ll be able to source food and medicine at a price you can’t beat.  You just need to be absolutely sure that what you’re picking is ok to forage.

Some plants have look-alikes that can be unpleasant and also dangerous.  Also, be absolutely sure the weeds haven’t been treated with chemicals such a weed-killer.

Some weeds can be eaten raw, while others require to be steamed or cooked. Other edible weeds can be used in teas, mixed in salads, or used topically on skin for medicinal purposes. You may already be familiar with some of these, including:  dandelions, milk thistle, violets, chick weed, garlic mustard, and Pineapple weed.
