For the first time in two years, the UC Cooperative Extension in Fresno County will host an almond symposium tomorrow.

“We had a North San Joaquin Valley symposium in Modesto this January and almond or pistachio meetings down south in Kern County, or Tulare County but a UC Farm Advisor was not here,”said the new UC Nut Crop Advisor Dr. Gurreet Brar.

He says there was about a two year gap between the time the former advisor left, and the UC found Brar and brought him on board.

“So, when I came here, I realized that because Fresno County is an important region from the almond production perspective. So what I was feeling was that the growers are already waiting for someone from the UC Cooperative Extension, and they had some expectations from the University of California.”

Brar says he wanted to meet those expectations and get useful information out to the growers as quickly as possible after coming to the Central Valley back in January. He’s bringing together a number of experts for the symposium. They’ll discuss pest problems, disease management, rootstock trials and other topics.

Growers who preregistered for the event will be entered into drawings for prizes.

The symposium is Wednesday, June 12 from 7:30 am to noon at the Kerman Community Center.
