California almond growers have experienced a huge increase in yields over the past 20-years. A big part of that is being credited to farmers and researchers working together. Joe MacIlvaine, president of Paramount Farming Company in Bakersfield says U-C research on irrigation and nitrogen have made a great impact. MacIlvaine says in the past, it was common to apply massive amounts of nitrogen in almond orchards during the fall. Now it’s during the spring when the trees start to grow. Improved nitrogen efficiency has also lead to greater yields. Side note here all of the almonds produced in the U-S are grown here in California. And California almonds make up about 80-percent of the entire world almond production.
