Agri View: Staggering Food Waste

Dan Agri View, Environment

Everett Griner dives into the world of statistics today talking about the staggering waste of food in today’s Agri View. Food is not the only thing wasted. Everett tells us what other precious resource we use which is also wasted.

I don’t know how many research organizations there are in America. There is one to study any subject that concerns people. Here is an example. Wasted food.

food WasteThis group found out we waste 150,000 tons of food every day. That is probably one pound for every person. That even sounds like a lot. To put it another way. That is equal to the use of 30 million acres of land every year. That is about 7 percent of total cropland in America.

If you want scary figures, it takes about 4 trillion gallons of water to irrigate that amount of land.

Fruits and vegetables were wasted most. Then came dairy products followed by meat. Meat waste totaled about 17 percent.

If you put the amount you eat on your plate, the food waste would almost vanish.

Think about that.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
