Cathy Isom tells us why we celebrate Earth Day and what you can do to show our planet some love. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

It was forty-seven years ago, on April 22, 1970, when twenty-million Americans took to the streets. Voicing their concern about the deteriorating environment and urging the government to take action before it was too late. The grass roots movement, which is now celebrated by over 2 billion people in 192 countries, led to the enactment of numerous environmental laws. Including the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. Today, Earth Day continues to be widely celebrated. The most common practice is planting new trees. As it falls on a Saturday this year, there is really no excuse not to get out there and sign up for some Earth-loving activity, or volunteer. For example assisting at local state parks with projects like habitat restoration. Other projects include native garden conservation, fence building, trail maintenance and beach cleanup. If you’re wanting to stay closer to home you could plant flowers. Try an organic garden or teach a young person about conserving water.
