California Cattle on Feed

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in California for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 410,000 head on August 1, 2016. The inventory was 4 percent below from last month and down 10 percent from August 1, 2015. During July, placements in feedlots totaled 35,000 head, down 15 percent from the previous year. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 45,000 head, up 10 percent from July 2015. Other disappearance totaled 5,000 head during July, unchanged from July 2015.

United States Cattle on Feed

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.2 million head on August 1, 2016. The inventory was up 2 percent from August 1, 2015. Placements in feedlots during July totaled 1.57 million head, 2 percent above from 2015. Net placements were 1.52 million head. During July, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 352,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 235,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 360,000 head, and 800 pounds and greater were 625,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 1.71 million head, 1 percent below from last year. Other disappearance totaled 50,000 head during July, 11 percent below from previous year.

United States Commercial Slaughter

meat hanging in butchers rackCommercial red meat production for the United States totaled 3.87 billion pounds in July, 2016, 4 percent below the 4.04 billion pounds produced in July 2015.

Beef production, at 2.02 billion pounds, was 1 percent below the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.48 million head, down 1 percent from July 2015.

Veal production totaled 5.60 million pounds, 19 percent below July a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 37,700 head, up 3 percent from July 2015.

Pork production totaled 1.82 billion pounds, down 8 percent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totaled 8.76 million head, down 7 percent from July 2015.

Lamb and mutton production, at 11.4 million pounds, was 12 percent below from July 2015. Sheep slaughter totaled 170,100 head, down 10 percent from last year.

California Milk Production

California milk producers had a total of 1.77 million milk cows for July that produced 3.38 billion pounds of milk. Milk production is up slightly from June, 2016 and down 1 percent from July 2015. Monthly milk per cow averaged 1,910 pounds, up 10 pounds from June 2016.
